Financial Assistance

When determining the amount to which a person is entitled, the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale does not take into account:

  • the value of the person’s assets (house, cottage, automobile, property, etc.);
  • liquid assets (amounts in hand or in a bank account, term deposits, savings bonds, etc.).

However, the Department does take into account:

  • the income of the person and that of the person’s spouse.

Also, only one person benefits from a general exclusion of $200 from his or her income. The exclusion is $300 in the case of a two-adult family.

The amount of financial assistance is paid every month and is increased on January first of each year, based on the annual index-adjustment rate applicable for social assistance benefits.

Financial assistance received is taxable.
